Our Story

Built on family, friendship & community

The story of Holy Smokes began in 2002 with a special barbecue sauce recipe created by Jeff Roberts. For years he kept it closely guarded — sharing the sauce only with friends and family fortunate enough to taste it.

In 2024, Jeff used the sauce for a fundraiser supporting his church's youth group. The barbecue was introduced under the name "Holy Smokes" — and it immediately resonated with the community. That same year, a Father's Day gift sparked something bigger: Brock Ouzts, Jeff Roberts and Calvin Childress built a custom smoker for Brock's father, Danny Ouzts. Weekends spent cooking together quickly grew into a shared passion.

The team entered the Hillsborough Hog Day competition and earned second place in their very first event. Today, Holy Smokes is proudly owned and operated by four families:

Community Commitment

More than a restaurant

Holy Smokes was built through community support, and giving back remains part of who we are.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in 2024, we took our smoker into Western North Carolina to serve families affected by the disaster. Over multiple weekends the team provided hot meals to residents facing difficult circumstances — and on Thanksgiving Day, traveled to Bee Log, NC, to share meals and fellowship with local families.

From church fundraisers and youth programs to disaster relief and local events, serving others is central to our mission. Because great food brings people together.

We're open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. We are closed Sunday and Monday.
